Vilamoura Top 10 Golf Courses

Well we set ourselves quite a challenge in trying to decide which would be our top 10 golf courses in and around the Vilamoura area. With so many great golf courses all within 30 minutes of each other we are sure a case could be made for all to be in the Top 10 and certainly we are sure that there will be quite some debate about in which order they should rank.

But in for a penny in for pound here we go with our top 10

Quinta do Lago South Course

Quinta do Lago South is a championship standard course designed in 1974 by American architect William Mitchell, who first helped the Algarve to carve out American style golf courses. Referred to as the “crown jewel” of Quinta do Lago, it has hosted eight Portuguese Open competitions and drummed up a prestigious reputation. The course, offering views of Ria Formosa National Park, was the location of Colin Montgomerie’s record-breaking 1989 Portuguese Open victory. Quinta do Lago Laranjal

The course is just a couple of kilometres from the Quinta do Lago resort and is based in the beautiful Ludo Valley. Renowned for the high quality of its greens, Laranjal sows the turf with Penn A4. Fairways receive Bermuda grass. Although the terrain is never too steep, the course is not for the faint hearted with its tricky lakes and long par 5s, including the signature 16th hole. Amendoeira Faldo Course

In a modern twist of a traditional recipe, cacti and wild herbs replace the role of Sunningdale’s heather, spartan Holm oaks and ancient olive trees take the place of a lush English woodland, and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone replace Berkshire’s sandy tracts in a golf course that revels in the classic principles of strategic play. In 2016 The Faldo Course won the title of Portugal’s Best Golf Course, given by World Golf Awards. See our best selling packages to play at Amendoeira Faldo

Quinta do Lago North Course

Suited for golfers who can naturally draw the ball, the course is also home to some lakes which turn out to be common pitfalls for even advanced players. These are located on the 13th and 18th hole. Although there are some unforgiving elements, the 2014 redesign saw the incorporation of low-cut Bermuda grass, which creates more amateur-friendly conditions around the greens. Golfers of all levels can enjoy the north course at Quinta do Lago. See our best selling packages to play at Quinta do Lago North Course

Dom Pedro Victoria

The Par-72 Championship layout, measuring 6.651 meters (7,273 yards) from the Palmer tees, incorporates and has ensured the preservation of natural wetlands on-site, as well as the typical vegetation of carob, olive and almond trees. All of this has made it the obvious venue of choice for many of the top international tournaments to visit Portugal in recent times. Indeed, it has served as the host venue to the Portugal Masters on every occasion since 2007, while the World Cup Championship was staged there in 2005. Amendoeira O Connor Jnr

The O Connor Course was designed by Christy O’Connor Jnr., this course complements the neighbouring Faldo Course and also takes full advantage of being situated in a fertile valley. Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test from all golfers, and the rich topsoil has been skillfully landscaped and planted with mature palm trees, affording a lush, ornamental setting like an extensive oasis. Vale do Lobo Royal

Perhaps best reserved for experienced golfers due to its hilly terrain and frequent water hazards, the course is one of the most famous in the world. Tee shots require high accuracy, and the coastal holes can be tough to navigate if the wind is up. Between the two courses at Vale do Lobo, the Royal Golf Course represents a slightly bigger challenge. Highlights include the world famous 16th hole. This is a par 3 which runs alongside the beach, requiring a tee shot lofted over a clifftop. See our best selling packages at Vale do Lobo Royal

Vale do Lobo Ocean

Creating draw and fade at the right times is crucial, and the lowest scores come around as a result of consistently great shot shaping. This course represents a great challenge for intermediate golfers, although the slopes can get steep. The inland holes provide a steady start before reaching the signature back nine, containing the majestic 11th hole and the par 3 15th hole which runs directly alongside the coast. San Lorenzo

San Lorenzo Golf Course is tucked away in the beautiful south-eastern corner of Quinta do Lago. With great views of the Atlantic, it meanders through natural lakes located in the Ria Formosa estuary. The course, from above, can be seen as a figure-of-eight. Immediately, the player’s technique is tested as they are met by a long par 5 on the 1st hole. After negotiating holes two through four which are set in a forest of pine trees, the coastal surroundings take centre stage by the 5th hole. See our best selling packages at San Lorenzo

The Old Course

In the heart of Vilamoura lies the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, The Old Course Golf Club. As one of the first-established layouts in the region, the Frank Pennink-design is well regarded throughout the golfing world. There can be no argument that, for all who are lucky enough to play here, this is a golf course that lives long in the memory. The modernisation programme preserved the challenge of this magnificent layout for future generations and raised the quality of The Old Course Golf Club to new heights.See our best selling packages to play at The Old Course

Monte Rei
